From turf science to Field of Play agronomy: meet Jonathan Douglas

Blending academic and technical expertise set Jonathan apart

Armed with qualifications ranging from turf science to business management, Jonathan brings a unique blend of technical expertise and strategic acumen to the table. His credentials speak volumes about his dedication to excellence and continuous learning in this ever-evolving field.

As an integral member of the agronomy teams at exclusive golf clubs in the UK, USA, and Australia, Jonathan handled responsibilities such as in-house construction, renovations, chemical applications, and irrigation installation projects. Then, Jonathan served as a Turf Grass Consultant for a privately owned agrochemical company, providing services to the natural turf sector across the UK. 

Additionally, he also held the roles of Golf Course Construction Manager and Maintenance Superintendent for a civil engineering development company. This experience brought him expertise in sports ground construction and redevelopment including works on major projects and venues such as The Gabba, Newcastle Jockey Club, SCG, Sydney Football Stadium, Brookvale Oval, Cricket Central NSW, and Adelaide Oval, among others.

Ensuring quality and performance through Jonathan’s multifaceted role 

As a Field of Play Consultant, Jonathan wears many hats at SPORTENG. From conducting site investigations to providing long-term asset planning, his role encompasses a wide array of consultancy services crucial to the lifecycle of a field of play. Whether it's drafting technical specifications or supervising construction, Jonathan's meticulous approach ensures that every project meets the highest quality and performance standards.

When asked about his role at SPORTENG, Jonathan said “I've always been fascinated by golf and sports ground construction and have been fortunate to work on some remarkable projects from start to finish. At SPORTENG, I now have the opportunity to collaborate closely with engineers, engaging in every phase of a project from inspection and design to specification input, construction, and client handover. It's both exciting and rewarding, especially when our hard work gains media recognition.”

Based in Sydney, Jonathan serves as SPORTENG's key liaison for turf agronomy, site assessment, and turf maintenance capabilities in New South Wales. His presence not only enhances our regional footprint but also allows us to offer tailored solutions to clients across the state. Jonathan's expertise is instrumental in addressing the unique challenges and requirements of projects in NSW, further solidifying SPORTENG's reputation as a leader in the field.

His SPORTENG works include projects such as Heffron Park, the training facility for the NRL team Sydney Rabbitohs, where he conducted agronomy testing during the handover phase. 
He also coordinated with the club’s executive management team the establishment phase and handover of the Kippax Oval, the NRL team Sydney Roosters training facility. 
Recently, he initiated construction service management for the development of new natural turf fields at Barton Park and Blacktown International Sports Park.

They need each other to deliver the best level of turf agronomy services to clients: “Ensuring the suitability of sands for sports grounds construction through soil analysis reviews is crucial. As a team, we conduct internal peer reviews to ensure accurate results and recommendations for all projects, aiming for accurate outcomes.” Jonathan mentioned, “In the field, we support each other with physical site assessments, data collection, and imagery to facilitate project delivery, maintaining continuous internal peer reviews of our work.”
